This year, riffing off the multiple amazing ideas I run across in a Facebook group for people who equate planners with crack, I kept a list of all the books I read (or DNF’d). I didn’t record those I started and put aside, intending to go back. But I did include audiobooks because those are still books, even if I’m not the one reading the words.
It was a great exercise in general–being mindful of my reading habits has given me an opportunity to focus on reading instead of playing on the interwebs–but heartening when I looked back and found a decent amount of diversity in my reading. I read stuff from and/or about straight white dudes (because this is publishing we’re talking about, yanno), but I also read PoC, transgender, non-het, and women. A lot.
Here are some books I highly recommend (not necessarily published in 2017–just…I only this year got around to reading them). I welcome your recommendations in comments, too!
A Wake of Vultures, by Lila Bowen
The Whites of Their Eyes, by Xen
Necrotech, by KC Alexander
Book of the Unnamed Midwife, by Meg Elison
The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas
Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline
